Phoenix Bar & Restaurant Insurance: Coverage for Every Hour You’re Open

Liquor liability, dram shop exposure, kitchen risk, and a staff that turns over: hospitality is one of the hardest classes to insure well. We've placed it for years.

01

Dram Shop Liability (ARS § 4-311)

A licensed establishment can be held liable for serving a visibly intoxicated adult, or any alcohol to a minor, who then causes injury.

02

Liquor Liability Insurance

Not mandated by statute, but most landlords, franchisors, and lenders require proof of it before an establishment can open or renew a lease.

03

Workers' Compensation & Commercial Auto

Workers' comp is required with 1+ employees (ARS § 23-901). Commercial auto is required for owned or operated delivery vehicles.

What We Recommend Beyond the Minimums

Liquor Liability

Responds to dram shop claims (over-service, service to a minor) that a standard GL policy excludes outright.

Assault & Battery Coverage

Many hospitality GL policies exclude this entirely. Late-hours venues and live entertainment should add it back explicitly.

Commercial Property & Business Interruption

Kitchen fire is the most common cause of restaurant claims. Pair it with equipment breakdown coverage for coolers and freezers.

Food Contamination / Spoilage

Covers inventory loss from a power outage or equipment failure: a walk-in going down overnight can mean thousands in spoiled inventory.

Employment Practices Liability

A high-turnover industry with elevated wage-and-hour and harassment claim exposure.

Umbrella / Excess Liability

Dram shop claims can be severe when serious injury is involved: most operators carry a substantial excess layer.

What Makes Hospitality Insurance Different

Liquor liability is a separate policy

Not an automatic endorsement: many owners find out otherwise only at claim time.

Assault & battery exclusions are easy to miss

A parking-lot incident can be denied outright without this coverage specifically added back.

E&S market access matters

Venues with entertainment, a prior claim, or late hours are often non-renewed by standard-market carriers.

Independent contractor staff

Bartenders, DJs, and security create added exposure if not properly insured and named as additional insureds.

Client voice

HIA has proven that they have the best rates and best coverage and amazing customer service year after year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I legally have to carry liquor liability insurance in Arizona?

No statute requires it, but Arizona is a dram shop state, and most landlords, franchisors, and lenders require proof anyway, so it functions as a requirement in practice.

What's the difference between liquor liability and general liability?

GL covers standard bodily injury and property claims. Liquor liability responds specifically to over-service and underage-service claims, which standard GL excludes.

Does my policy cover a fight that breaks out at my bar?

Only if assault & battery coverage is specifically included: many hospitality GL policies exclude it entirely.

I was non-renewed after a claim. Can I still get covered?

Yes. We have access to excess & surplus lines markets that specialize in harder-to-place hospitality risks.

Do I need separate coverage for a patio or live events?

Often, yes: outdoor and event activity can expand liability exposure beyond what your base policy anticipates.
